Any flystrike is bad news for sheep and devastating for production. With tupping fast approaching in one of the wettest summers in memory, it’s timely to consider the options for treating sheep against external parasites.
Prevention of flystrike is always preferable to treatment. Vet Services sheep technicians offer jetting off the conveyor, a craigco jetter or a shower dipper. These are an effective and economical way to eradicate flies, mites, lice & ticks. The bonus is with our water truck no water is required at the yards and the whole job can run without constantly having to refill a tank.
If you already have struck sheep, you will want to treat them with a dip product which adds something effective to knock-down any maggots, or else spot treat them with an OP product like Maggo. To discuss what product is best for you give our retail team a call for a chat. Struck sheep only have a 20% chance of getting in lamb. Ensure that you have used an appropriate product in the appropriate way to ensure it gets you through.
Other strategies to preventing flystrike include, removing any soiled wool, maintaining a good parasite control programme, carefully grazing (for example you may want to move stock to windy exposed pastures which flies don’t favour), and disposing of any dead stock promptly. The main aim to is to keep sheep as unattractive to flies and external parasites as possible!
