Easter can be a busy time for our clinics. Egg hunts, family gatherings and planting the autumn vegetable garden are all activities with dangerous temptations for our pets which can lead to an emergency trip to the vet!
Here’s a few classic Easter treats that can be very harmful for your pets and should therefore be avoided:
🍫 Chocolate contains caffeine and a chemical called theobromine – both are dangerous to cats and dogs.
🍇 Hot cross buns contain sultanas and raisins. Sultanas, raisins, and grapes can cause significant damage to kidneys which may be irreversible.
🦴🍗 Cooked bones can cause a multitude of problems which lead to a trip to the vet (constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, choking, foreign body obstructions, broken teeth, and infections).
A couple of other hazards to keep in mind are rat and slug baits and poisonous plants.
🐌🌿 Easters a popular weekend for autumn gardening. Last Easter our vet team had two cases of slug bait poisoning! (Read more about these here https://www.vshb.co.nz/articles/pets-companion-animals/slug-bait-toxicity-warning/).
Slug & Rat Baits Dogs are attracted to slug and rat baits and will seek it out so please be careful when using it on your property and lock unused boxes away.
🌺 Lilies are highly poisonous to cats, ingestion of even a small amount can cause irreversible kidney failure.
Enjoy your Easter but please keep an eye out for your pets around these hazards. Our on-duty vet teams will be available 24 hours if you need urgent assistance with your animals over the weekend.
